G-Cans Project: Underground Project The World's Largest In Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, with a population of 12.4 million, is one of the largest cities in the world and still growing. This is not only known for having a large number of fans of anime and robots, but also for the annual rainy and typhoon season that could flood the whole city. Therefore, there is a need to build an underground drainage system heavily to fight the problem. In 1992, a plan that called G-Cans Project or the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (drainage system) is approved and construction begins. G-Cans Project completed in 2004. Here are some pictures of the "Tokyo Drainage System: Largest in the World".

To absorb rain water, the complex is equipped with 59 turbopump. their total capacity of 14 thousand horsepower, they can run faster than 200 tons of water per second. This seems obvious may be designed to flood the most intense. However, in this area in a heavy rain fell on 200 millimeters of rainfall, and sometimes up to 400 (monthly rainfall for Moscow, for example, is 35 mm). Therefore, it placed a large margin of safety facilities. Let all the sea would rise up in the clouds and falling rain. Designers should consider a set of underground storage is very large for the thousands of tons of water onto the high rainfall areas is not to dive.

Since its opening, the G-Cans have prevented flooding into the metropolis, but "unfortunately" can not prevent many people, including celebrities and filmmakers from the flood. This is because the G-Cans project is also intended to be a tourist attraction, and can be visited free of charge twice a day, from Tuesday to Friday. Unfortunately, the tour is done only in Japanese.
